Viva México, Viva Nueva York

Jika González, September 13th, 2009

5th Ave. was closed today from 44th to 59th Sts. as the neighberhood and more specifically the Mexican community of Sunset Park in Brooklyn came together to celebrate Mexico’s anniversary of independence that will take place on eve of the 16th.

Mexican ballet dancers, mariachis, clowns and even city council candidates and their supporters were present. The candidates for the up coming election on Tuesday didn’t miss their chance to hand out fliers and try to get some votes. Many of the food and game stands where sponsored by their campaigns.

September 15th is also the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in honor of those with roots in Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Spain. According to the US Census Bureau, in 2008 the Hispanic population reached 46.9 million. The Hispanic population was also estimated to be the fastest growing minority group growing at a 3.2%.

  1. NICE SLIDESHOW, GREAT MUSIC. LET’S FIGURE OUT HOW TO CHANGE COMPRESSION SO PIX LOOK BETTER. AND I THINK YOU NEED TO MAKE AN ARGUMENT FOR BLACK AND WHITE THAT’S MORE THAN JUST ‘SOMETIMES I DO THAT.’ BUT MAIN NOTE HERE IS THAT YOU COULD INTEGRATE EITHER TEXT OR VOICEOVER INTO THIS SLIDESHOW AND GIVE THE VIEWER EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE.

TEXT WISE, I’D MOVE UP LATINO POPULATION STATS TO TOP OF THE PIECE–THIS IS THE BIG NEWS. THEN WE NEED LOCAL STATS–HOW MANY LATINOS IN NEW YORK, AND FROM WHAT SPECIFIC PLACES? THEN, AFTER A FEW IMAGES, GO TO DETAILS OF THIS EVENT: EARLY MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION IN SUNSET PARK.
WOULD LOVE TO SEE A QUOTE OR TWO FROM PARTICIPANTS. VIDEO WOULD BE GREAT, BUT WORDS COULD BE PRINTED OVER PHOTO PORTRAIT AS WELL.
ALL IN ALL, GOOD FIRST DRAFT. LET’S KEEP GOING WITH THESE SLIDESHOWS.
